Makkah Region

Cradle of purity and meeting place of civilizations

The Makkah region is located in the heart of western Saudi Arabia, where the sanctity of the place is intertwined with the antiquity of the people. It is one of the thirteen administrative regions in the Kingdom, and it ranks fourth in terms of area. Its borders extend between Madinah to the north and Asir and Al-Baha to the south, while it is embraced from the east by the Riyadh region. It was ruled since 2015 by His Royal Highness Prince Khalid Al-Faisal bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, known for his wisdom and poetry. This was the only region in the Kingdom that was subject to direct royal administration for 34 years when King Faisal bin Abdulaziz was the deputy of his father, the founding king, and then Crown Prince during the reign of King Saud. The region includes the holiest place on earth – the Grand Mosque, the direction of prayer for Muslims worldwide – making it a spiritual and humanitarian center visited by more than a billion Muslims every day. Mecca is its administrative capital, while the holy sites occupy 2% of the region's total area. These are uninhabited lands dedicated to religious rituals. The region also hosts the headquarters of major international institutions, including:

1- Muslim World League

2- The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (the second largest international organization after the United Nations in terms of the number of members)

In Mecca, simplicity meets tradition, and spirituality meets generosity. It is the cultural meeting place for the people of the Hejaz, where the cultures of the world blend into one fabric.

Makkah customs and traditions:

The henna night: an old custom celebrated by the bride before her wedding, where she is adorned with henna and perfumes in an atmosphere full of female joy.

Hospitality: an inherited custom that expresses people's love for one another.

Food exchange during Ramadan: A picture of authentic Hijazi solidarity.

Mantu – Hijazi Balila – Makawi Saleeq.

A story and proverb from Makki:

It is said that a man from Mecca used to hear the call to prayer and send food to everyone who heard it, and it was said about him:

"He who hears the call to prayer is satisfied."

The proverb is used today to express the generosity of the people of Mecca and their boundless hospitality.
